Planning conception after a molar pregnancy

The date when it is appropriate to try again depends on the type of molar pregnancy, how hormone levels change, whether further treatment was needed, and the follow-up plan used by your specialist service. Use the completion date given by that team rather than a general calendar rule.

Needing chemotherapy changes the treatment and monitoring pathway, so conception planning should include the oncology team. They can discuss recovery, current medicines, fertility concerns, and when pregnancy would no longer interfere with surveillance.

Attend every scheduled hormone test and use reliable contraception until the specialist releases you from follow-up. Discuss which method suits you, especially if you are receiving treatment or taking medicines that should be avoided in pregnancy. Do not stop prescribed medicine without advice.

Before trying, request a medication review and discuss emotional readiness as well as physical recovery. Once pregnant, tell the maternity team about the previous molar pregnancy early so they can arrange an appropriate assessment and coordinate with the specialist service.

Contact the specialist service if you have a positive pregnancy test while still under follow-up, miss a scheduled blood or urine test, or develop unexpected vaginal bleeding. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fainting, breathlessness, chest pain, or a sudden severe headache with neurological symptoms.

Ask which type of mole was diagnosed, how you will know monitoring is complete, and what to do if contraception fails. Also clarify whether treatment affects the recommended timing, whom to contact after a positive pregnancy test, and what early maternity follow-up is planned.
