Compression wear after liposuction: what to know

Liposuction temporarily changes the tissues beneath the skin. Fluid, bruising, tightness, and altered sensation can occur around treated areas. Compression wear applies even contact that may help control swelling and provide a supported feeling as you move. It cannot guarantee a particular contour and does not replace wound care, gradual activity, or follow-up.

Different garments cover different areas, including the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, or chin. The best design depends on the treated sites, incision placement, drains, and your body shape. A garment that leaves a sharp edge can create pressure in one spot instead of distributing it.

Use the schedule supplied by your surgeon, including instructions for bathing and sleep. Smooth the fabric over the skin, keep seams away from incisions, and check for bunching behind the knees or at the waist. Look for blisters, persistent marks, increasing tenderness, or numb patches when you remove it.

Keep moving gently within your activity limits. Avoid changing to stronger compression, wearing a borrowed garment, or forcing a closure over new swelling. Wash and dry the garment as directed so it keeps its shape, and report a poor fit before it causes skin injury.

Ask the surgical team about increasing redness, warmth, drainage, fever, worsening pain, a rapidly enlarging swollen area, or a wound that opens. Emergency assessment is needed for sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing blood, collapse, or severe light-headedness. New numbness or blue, gray, or unusually pale skin under the garment also needs prompt advice.

Clarify the garment's coverage, pressure, daily schedule, cleaning method, and replacement plan. Ask how to position it around drains or dressings, when to expect a refitting, and which asymmetry is normal while swelling settles.
