Compression suit after liposuction: what to know

After fat-removal surgery, treated tissues can hold fluid and feel firm, tender, or uneven for a while. A suit gives steady external support over the areas covered by the operation. It may make movement more comfortable and help the skin and tissues settle, but it does not remove remaining fat or instantly define the final contour.

A suit should feel supportive rather than crushing. Pressure that causes sharp pain, breathing difficulty, deep marks, skin breakdown, tingling, or cold or discolored skin is a warning that the fit needs review. Swelling and dressings can change how it sits.

Follow the exact instructions for when to wear the suit and when to remove it. Put it on without twisting seams, pulling hard across incisions, or trapping gauze underneath. Check the edges, zips, openings, and skin folds regularly; keep the garment clean and dry according to its care instructions.

Stand up and walk briefly when permitted, drink as advised, and avoid strenuous activity until cleared. Do not add extra layers or switch to a tighter garment because swelling looks uneven. If the suit rubs an incision or becomes difficult to fasten, contact the team that fitted it.

Call your surgeon for rapidly increasing swelling, worsening pain, fever, foul-smelling drainage, wound separation, or a new area of redness and heat. Get emergency help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, fainting, coughing blood, or severe weakness. Remove or loosen the suit only as instructed if it causes numbness, blue or pale skin, or severe pressure.

Ask which zones the suit should cover, how snug it should be, whether you need openings for drains or dressings, and how to manage bathing and laundry. Ask when you may change sizes and which swelling changes are expected at your follow-up.
