Compression garments after plastic surgery

The appropriate style, pressure and wearing schedule depend on the operation, incision sites and stage of healing. A garment should feel supportive without causing increasing pain, numbness, skin colour changes or breathing difficulty.

A fitted garment applies even external pressure around the operated area. This can help manage expected swelling, reduce rubbing and make movement feel more secure. It does not replace wound care, drainage instructions or follow-up appointments.

More pressure is not automatically better. Folding, rolling or a tight seam can concentrate pressure over healing skin. Fit may also change as swelling settles, so the surgical team may recommend a different size or design during recovery.

Follow the supplied schedule for putting the garment on, taking it off and washing it. Smooth the fabric and check that closures do not sit over an incision or drain. Keep dressings positioned as instructed, and do not apply creams beneath the garment unless the care team approves them.

Inspect the covered skin whenever the garment is removed. Look for blisters, broken skin, persistent grooves, new drainage or spreading redness. Ask the team how to manage showering and whether a spare garment is useful while one is being cleaned and fully dried.

Contact your surgical team promptly for worsening swelling, pain that is increasing rather than settling, fever, foul-smelling drainage, an opening incision, or redness and warmth spreading beyond the wound. Remove or loosen the garment if the team has told you it is safe to do so when it causes numbness, marked tingling, cold skin or a blue or unusually pale colour.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, coughing blood, or new painful swelling in one leg. These symptoms need assessment and should not be managed by adjusting the garment alone.

Ask which garment and size match your procedure, whether it should cover the incisions, and when the wearing schedule should change. Confirm how to wash it, what can be worn underneath, and whom to contact if swelling shifts or the fit becomes uncomfortable.
