Compression garments and binders after a tummy tuck

A binder wraps and adjusts with fasteners, whereas a fitted garment has a set shape and size. Either can become harmful if overtightened, folded, or positioned over drains and incisions incorrectly.

A binder allows the team to vary tension as early swelling changes and can be easier to place around dressings. A fitted garment can provide more consistent coverage but may need reassessment if body shape or swelling changes.

The aim is support and controlled pressure, not the tightest possible wrap. Your abdomen should not feel crushed, and you should be able to breathe fully, stand as instructed, and walk safely.

Place the lower and upper edges where your surgical team demonstrated, then secure fasteners with equal tension. Check that the binder has not migrated upward or folded while sitting. Keep drain tubing free from pulling, kinking, and direct pressure.

Inspect the skin and incision according to your wound-care plan. Ask for help if fastening requires straining or twisting, and never place absorbent pads, rigid inserts, or another corset underneath unless these were supplied or approved by the team.

Report increasing redness, heat, wound fluid, bad odour, separation of incision edges, worsening pain, new asymmetric swelling, skin blistering, or a binder that suddenly no longer fits. A tense or rapidly enlarging area should be examined rather than compressed more firmly.

Call emergency services for breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or a painful swollen calf. Loosen a binder that is clearly interfering with breathing while you obtain urgent help.
