Compression garments after breast augmentation

The appropriate design depends on the incision, implant position, and your surgeon's recovery plan. Underwire, firm bands, or added compression straps should not be introduced unless the team specifically approves them.

A suitable postoperative garment supports the chest and can make movement more comfortable while early swelling settles. The cups should hold both breasts without flattening them, and the lower band should remain level rather than riding onto an incision.

Straps should not dig into the shoulders, while closures and seams should stay away from tender skin. New implants may initially sit or feel different from each other as tissues recover, so do not try to correct their position with an unapproved tight garment.

Follow the team's directions for putting it on, taking it off, bathing, and laundering. When checking the skin, look along the band, straps, and closures for rubbing or persistent indentations. Make sure dressings remain where they were placed.

If the bra feels suddenly tighter, one cup no longer fits, or swelling makes the closure difficult, contact the clinic before switching styles. Keep a clean approved spare only if your team has recommended one.

Call your surgeon promptly if one breast rapidly becomes more swollen, firm, painful, or visibly different, or if you notice spreading redness, warmth, wound drainage, fever, an opening incision, or altered nipple colour. The garment should not be used to conceal or compress a new change.

Get urgent help for chest pain, difficulty breathing, collapse, or severe weakness. These are not expected garment-fit problems and need immediate assessment.

Ask which bra features are suitable for your incisions, when an underwire may be considered, whether a stabilising band is intended for you, and how swelling should affect sizing. Confirm the clinic's contact route for changes between appointments.
