What should you know about a compression belt after liposuction?

Liposuction leaves treated tissues swollen and tender while fluid shifts and the skin settles. A prescribed garment or belt applies even support over the operated area and may reduce rubbing during movement. It should feel secure without causing numbness, throbbing, skin colour change or breathing restriction. Compression does not remove additional fat, replace wound care or determine the final contour on its own; recovery changes gradually.

Wear the belt for the periods and duration your surgical team gives you, including instructions about washing and showering. Check the skin at the edges and around incisions, keep dressings as directed, and avoid folding the garment into a tight band. A belt that slips, rolls or causes pressure points needs review rather than improvised tightening. Attend planned follow-up visits. Contact the surgical team promptly for worsening one-sided swelling, increasing pain, fluid leaking from an incision, fever, spreading redness or a foul smell. Remove or loosen the belt only according to the emergency instructions you were given if it causes severe numbness, blue or pale skin, or difficulty breathing. Seek urgent care for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, fainting or a painful swollen calf.

Ask when to start wearing the belt, how snug it should be, whether it should cover the treated area fully, how to wash it, and when sleeping or exercise with it is acceptable. Ask which swelling pattern is expected and which change needs same-day advice.
