What should you know about compressed liquid nitrogen?

Liquid nitrogen boils at an extremely low temperature. In dermatology, a clinician delivers it through a spray or a contact applicator to create a controlled freezing injury in a selected lesion. The treated area may sting, redden, swell or form a blister, followed by a crust that separates as the skin heals. The response depends on the lesion, its thickness, its site and the depth of freezing required.

Tell the clinician about poor circulation, reduced sensation, pigment changes after skin injury, immune problems and medicines that affect healing. Contact the treating clinic if pain is increasing rather than settling, the blister becomes extensive, or the wound develops spreading redness, warmth, pus or fever. Seek urgent help for facial swelling affecting breathing or vision, or for bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure.
