The test itself does not explain every cause of hearing difficulty.

Blocked sound from earwax buildup can differ from hearing change associated with Meniere's disease. A hearing test may be part of a wider ear examination, especially when hearing changes occur with ringing, fullness, dizziness, or imbalance.

Tell the clinician about recent ear pain, discharge, dizziness, noise exposure, infections, medicines, and whether one or both ears are affected. Bring hearing devices if you use them. Follow the response instructions carefully and mention if you could not hear a tone or were distracted. Afterward, ask for a plain-language explanation of each ear, whether the pattern is conductive or sensorineural, and whether you need ear treatment, monitoring, hearing support, or specialist review.

Arrange urgent medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, or hearing change with severe dizziness, facial weakness, new neurological symptoms, severe headache, or a painful discharge. Prompt review is also sensible when hearing loss follows an injury or rapidly worsens. Do not insert objects into the ear to clear blockage while waiting for assessment.

Ask whether wax or infection could affect the result, which part of the ear the findings point to, whether speech understanding is affected, and what follow-up is needed if hearing changes continue.
