What should you know about complete tattoo removal?

A laser delivers short pulses of energy that fragment tattoo pigment beneath the skin. The immune system then gradually clears the smaller particles, so treatments must be separated to allow healing. Ink colour, depth, density, age, location, and any scarring affect how the tattoo responds. A test spot may help the clinician assess the reaction. Lightening is common, but some pigment can be resistant and complete clearing cannot be promised.

Avoid tanning and tell the clinician about medicines, active skin disease, a history of raised scars, and cosmetic or medical tattoos. After a session, redness, swelling, tenderness, blistering, or crusting may occur. Keep the area clean, do not pick the surface, protect it from sunlight, and follow the dressing instructions. Do not apply unapproved acids, bleaching products, or home-removal creams, which can burn the skin and make later treatment harder.

Contact the clinic for spreading redness, worsening pain, pus, fever, an unusual rash, or a wound that is not healing. Seek urgent care for facial swelling that affects breathing or vision. Report marked lightening or darkening of the surrounding skin so the treatment plan can be reviewed.
