It can also arise near the shoulder in the upper arm bone and, less often, in other bones. The tumour begins in bone-forming cells rather than spreading to bone from another organ.

A tumour near the knee may cause deep bone pain, swelling, tenderness or a limp. Symptoms can become more noticeable with activity or at night, but their pattern varies. A growth near the shoulder can make arm movement uncomfortable or restricted.

These changes have many possible causes. Osteosarcoma can present with persistent pain and swelling, but those symptoms alone do not establish the diagnosis. Imaging examines the bone, and a biopsy is used to identify the tumour type.

Arrange a medical assessment for bone pain that persists, worsens, interrupts sleep or occurs with swelling or reduced use of a limb. Note where the discomfort began, whether an injury preceded it and which movements make it worse.

If a bone tumour is suspected, the care team may coordinate scans and a carefully planned biopsy. Biopsy planning matters because the tissue-sampling route should fit with any later operation. Treatment commonly combines specialist cancer care, which may include chemotherapy and tumour-removal surgery.

Seek urgent help after a sudden crack or severe pain in a painful or swollen bone, especially if you cannot bear weight or use the limb. A weakened bone can fracture and needs prompt assessment.

Rapidly increasing swelling, new numbness, a pale or cold limb, or pain that is severe and difficult to control also warrants urgent evaluation. These warning signs drive the urgency regardless of the eventual cause.

Ask which bone and nearby structures are involved, what imaging shows, how the biopsy will be planned, and whether an orthopaedic oncology team should coordinate care. If osteosarcoma is confirmed, ask how treatment may affect the nearby joint, limb function, rehabilitation and everyday activity.
