Common antihistamines for hives

Hives happen when skin cells release histamine and other chemicals, causing itchy, raised areas that may move or fade. Antihistamines block histamine at its target and can lessen itching and new welts; they do not remove every possible trigger. Hives can occur with an infection, heat, pressure, a medicine or an allergic reaction.

Some newer options are less sedating, while older options may cause marked sleepiness, dry mouth, blurred vision or slower reactions. Symptoms such as Runny Nose, Itchy Eyes or an Itchy Throat may occur with other allergic conditions, but treatment still depends on the whole pattern.

Use one product according to its label or prescriber’s directions. Check combination cold and allergy products so you do not take the same type of medicine twice. Avoid driving, alcohol and hazardous tasks if you feel drowsy. A pharmacist can check interactions with sleeping tablets, anxiety medicines and other sedating products.

Keep the skin cool, avoid scratching and note possible links with foods, medicines, heat, pressure or exercise. Do not change a prescribed dose or give an adult product to a child without advice.

Call emergency services for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, or difficulty swallowing. Hives with these symptoms can be part of a severe allergic reaction and should not be managed with antihistamine alone. Arrange medical review when hives keep returning, last beyond a short episode, or begin after a new medicine.

Ask which antihistamine fits your age and health, whether it may make you sleepy, how long to use it, and whether a medicine, infection or physical trigger could be involved. Mention asthma, pregnancy and all regular medicines.
