What should you know about combined ADHD?

Short answer

Combined ADHD describes a pattern in which both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms are persistent enough to affect daily functioning across relevant settings.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What combined ADHD involves

A person with this presentation may struggle to organise tasks, follow through, remember details or sustain attention, while also feeling restless, interrupting, acting quickly or finding it hard to wait. Symptoms can look different at home, school and work. Difficulty concentrating alone does not establish ADHD, and anxiety, poor sleep, depression, substance use or other health conditions can affect attention and activity. Assessment considers development, current function, other explanations and information from more than one setting when available.

Support and next steps

Record specific examples, when they began, and how they affect study, work, relationships, driving or home tasks. Break work into visible steps, use reminders and reduce avoidable distractions while seeking assessment. A Mental Health Assessment can help clarify whether ADHD fits and identify coexisting concerns. Treatment may include skills-based support, environmental adjustments, psychological care and, for some people, prescribed medicine. Medication decisions require a clinician who can review health history and monitor response.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment when attention, impulsivity or restlessness is persistent and is causing missed responsibilities, conflict, unsafe decisions or significant distress. Seek urgent help for thoughts of self-harm, severe agitation, psychosis, intoxication or immediate danger. Feeling anxious or irritability may accompany attention difficulties, but they should be assessed rather than attributed automatically to ADHD.

Questions for your doctor

What information should I bring to an ADHD assessment? Could sleep, anxiety or another condition explain part of this pattern? What non-medication supports are suitable? If medicine is considered, how will benefits and side effects be monitored?

Questions people ask

Does being distractible mean I have combined ADHD?

No. ADHD requires a persistent pattern with meaningful functional effects, and an assessment checks other possible explanations.

Can adults have combined ADHD?

Yes. Adults may have the same underlying pattern, although responsibilities and coping strategies can change how symptoms appear.
