Collins water-seal spirometer: what should you know?

The device uses a chamber that moves in a water seal as air enters or leaves it. A mouthpiece connects the person to the chamber, allowing the equipment to measure breathed volume. Modern systems may use electronic sensors, but the purpose is similar: to assess how the lungs move air.

Spirometry results can include measurements taken during a full breath and a forceful blow. The numbers are interpreted with your age, height, sex, symptoms, effort, and medical history. A device reading is not a diagnosis by itself.

Follow the testing centre's instructions about meals, smoking, exercise, and inhalers. Wear clothing that allows your chest and abdomen to expand. During the test, sit upright, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, and follow the technician's instructions for a deep breath and strong, sustained exhalation.

A brief feeling of light-headedness can occur after forceful blowing and should be reported immediately. Stop and seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, chest pain that does not settle, fainting, blue lips, or confusion. Arrange clinical review for ongoing cough, wheeze, or reduced exercise tolerance rather than relying on a home interpretation of the result.
