Collarbone fracture cast: what patients should know

Short answer

A collarbone fracture is usually supported with a sling because a rigid cast cannot effectively surround and immobilise the collarbone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Can a collarbone fracture be put in a cast?

A clinician chooses support after examining the shoulder and reviewing imaging. Some injuries need closer alignment monitoring or surgery, especially when the skin, nerves, blood vessels, or fracture position are concerning.

How support protects the collarbone

The collarbone lies just beneath the skin and links the breastbone to the shoulder. A sling limits arm movement and reduces the pull transmitted through the fracture while healing begins. A figure-of-eight brace may occasionally be considered, but it can be uncomfortable and is not suitable for every fracture.

Unlike a wrist or ankle, the shoulder area cannot be enclosed in a practical rigid cast without restricting the chest and nearby joints. The term cast may therefore be used loosely when the actual device is a sling or brace.

What to do while the fracture heals

Wear the sling as instructed, keep the elbow supported, and avoid lifting, pushing, contact sport, or overhead activity until cleared. Move the fingers, wrist, and elbow if your clinician permits so they do not become unnecessarily stiff. Sleep in a supported position and check exposed skin for rubbing.

Attend follow-up because repeat examination or imaging may be needed to check alignment and healing. Begin shoulder movement only at the stage advised; doing too much early can aggravate pain, while prolonged complete rest can contribute to stiffness.

When to seek urgent care

Get urgent medical help if the hand becomes cold, pale, blue, increasingly numb, or weak, or if swelling rapidly worsens. Immediate assessment is also needed when bone breaks through the skin, the skin over the fracture becomes tightly stretched or blanched, breathing is difficult, or chest pain follows the injury.

Contact the treating team promptly if pain is escalating despite the advised medicine, the sling causes pressure injury, or a new fall or impact occurs.

Questions for your clinician

Ask what type of fracture you have, whether alignment is acceptable, how the sling should fit, and which joints you may move now. Clarify when you can drive, work, sleep without support, resume lifting, and start physiotherapy. Also ask what changes would make surgery or additional imaging necessary.

Questions people ask

Can I remove the sling to wash?

Follow the treating clinician's instructions. If removal is allowed, support the injured arm, avoid lifting it away from the body, and replace the sling with the straps correctly adjusted.

Why is my shoulder still sore in a sling?

A sling reduces movement but does not remove all forces across the fracture. Persistent or worsening pain, poor fit, skin pressure, or new symptoms should be assessed.

Will I need physiotherapy?

Guided exercises may help restore shoulder movement and strength after the fracture is stable. The appropriate starting point depends on healing, pain, and treatment type.
