What should you know about Colief cradle cap?

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis, usually appears as greasy or dry scales on a baby’s scalp. It may look white, yellow or brown and often causes little discomfort. It is not caused by poor hygiene and is not a reason to stop feeding or using a prescribed infant medicine. A rash that is very itchy, intensely red or present beyond the scalp may have another cause.

Wash the scalp with a mild baby cleanser, then soften adherent scale with a small amount of plain emollient before brushing gently with a soft brush. Do not pick, scratch or pull flakes away, and stop if the skin becomes sore. Keep oils away from the eyes and do not use adult dandruff products unless a clinician specifically recommends them. If scales persist, ask about an appropriate emollient therapy; a clinician may consider topical antifungal treatment when the pattern suggests it.

Arrange a review if the scalp is bleeding, oozing, swollen, painful, strongly inflamed or developing crusts, or if the rash spreads to the face or body. Seek prompt advice if your baby seems unwell, feeds poorly or has a fever. Do not apply a new medicated product to an infant scalp without guidance.

Ask whether the appearance is typical cradle cap, which emollient is suitable, how often to wash the scalp, whether infection is present, and whether a short course of topical antifungal treatment is needed.
