Cold weather runny nose: what it means and what to do

Cold air can irritate the lining inside the nose. The nose warms and humidifies inhaled air, and this process may produce extra watery mucus that drips or causes congestion. Symptoms often settle after you warm up. A common cold may add a sore throat, cough, tiredness or fever. Allergic rhinitis can cause repeated sneezing, an itchy nose and clear drainage, while dust-mite or pet allergy symptoms may follow exposure indoors. Sinusitis is more concerning when facial pressure, blocked nasal passages or thick drainage persist.

Cover your nose and mouth with a scarf when going outside, and breathe through your nose where comfortable. Saline nasal spray or a gentle saline rinse can loosen mucus; use safe water and clean equipment for any rinse. Drink fluids and avoid smoke or other irritants. Notice whether symptoms follow a particular place, season or animal. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose treatment if allergy symptoms keep returning; do not use a decongestant spray for longer than its label advises.

Arrange medical advice if the runny nose continues, keeps returning, or interferes with sleep or daily activities. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or face, severe headache, confusion, or a high fever with marked illness. Get prompt assessment for one-sided bloody drainage, severe facial pain, or symptoms after a significant injury.
