What should you know about cold weather eczema hands?

Cold, dry air draws moisture from the outer skin layer. Wind, hot water, detergents and repeated hand sanitiser use can add irritation. People with atopic dermatitis may flare more readily because their barrier is already sensitive. The skin can feel tight, rough or itchy before visible redness appears. Scratching may create breaks that sting and allow germs to enter. Look for dry skin, itchy skin or skin cracking rather than assuming every winter rash is eczema.

Apply a thick, fragrance-free moisturiser after washing and whenever the hands feel dry; ointments or creams usually protect better than light lotions. Use lukewarm water, a gentle cleanser and soft gloves for household work. Wear warm gloves outdoors, and consider cotton liners if sweating inside gloves causes irritation. Do not peel scale or scrub the rash. A clinician can confirm whether you need a prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment, especially when home care is not settling the flare.

Arrange an assessment if cracks bleed repeatedly, sleep is disrupted by itching, the rash spreads, or symptoms keep returning despite careful moisturising. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, honey-coloured crusts, fever or rapidly worsening pain, because broken skin can become infected.
