Cold symptoms and tension headache: what to know

Short answer
Cold symptoms can accompany a tension-type headache through congestion, poor sleep, muscle tension or dehydration, but a sudden or severe headache needs urgent assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How a cold may trigger head pain
A tension-type headache often feels like pressure or a band around the head, with tenderness in the scalp, neck or shoulders. During a cold, coughing, poor sleep, fever, reduced fluid intake and prolonged muscle tightening can add to this discomfort. Nasal congestion may also create pressure around the face, although facial pressure is not the same as a dangerous brain symptom.
A headache with cold symptoms does not by itself establish the cause. Note its onset, location, severity, duration and whether movement, light, vomiting or neck stiffness changes the picture.
Practical steps
Rest in a quiet room, drink fluids regularly, and try gentle neck and shoulder movement if those muscles feel tight. A warm compress may ease muscular tension. If you use an over-the-counter pain medicine, follow the label and check with a pharmacist if you have other conditions, take regular medicines, or are pregnant. Avoid repeatedly taking pain medicine without advice, because frequent use can maintain headaches.
If the pattern is new, keeps recurring, or is not settling as the cold improves, arrange a GP consultation for an assessment.
When to seek care
Get emergency help for a sudden severe headache, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, a seizure, fainting, confusion, severe breathing difficulty, or a headache after a significant head injury. Seek prompt advice for fever with a stiff neck, a new rash, repeated vomiting, vision loss, or a headache that steadily worsens. A persistent or unusual headache deserves a clinical review even when cold symptoms are mild.
Questions for your doctor
Does this pattern fit a tension-type headache? Could dehydration, sinus symptoms or another illness be contributing? Which pain-relief options are suitable for me, and when should I return if it continues?

Questions people ask
Can a cold cause a tension headache?
Cold-related poor sleep, coughing, muscle tension and reduced fluid intake can accompany or trigger pressure-like head pain.
Is every headache with a cold a tension headache?
No. The pattern and warning signs matter; sudden severe pain or neurological symptoms require urgent assessment.
