Cold sweats without fever: what to know

A cold sweat is clammy perspiration that may occur without a raised temperature. It can follow fear, stress, pain, dehydration or low blood sugar. Some infections do not produce fever at every stage, and a thermometer reading can be affected by timing or medicine. Respiratory illnesses such as the common cold or acute bronchitis may cause chills or sweating alongside cough, while skin infection can cause a local hot, tender area. The symptom by itself cannot identify a particular illness.

Record your temperature, the time of each episode, recent food and fluids, medicines, cough, pain, rash or urinary symptoms. This context helps distinguish a brief trigger from a recurring problem.

Rest somewhere comfortable, take fluids in small amounts and eat if you have missed a meal. Check your temperature with the same thermometer when symptoms occur. Avoid overheating yourself or taking antibiotics without assessment. Contact a clinician if episodes keep returning, disrupt sleep, follow a new medicine, or occur with cough, weight change, fatigue, diarrhoea or a local skin change. Mention travel, animal exposure and contact with illness when relevant.

Get urgent help for cold sweats with chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion, blue lips, new weakness or a rapidly worsening illness. Seek prompt care for a painful spreading rash, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or inability to keep fluids down, even when there is no fever.
