What should you know about cold sneezing a lot?

Sneezing is a reflex that clears irritants from the nose. A common cold may cause bouts of sneezing with congestion, a sore throat or a runny nose. Allergic rhinitis commonly presents with repeated sneezing, an itchy nose, watery eyes and symptoms that follow exposure. House dust mites and pets can be triggers. Consider whether symptoms are limited to a particular room, season or contact, or whether they behave more like a short-lived infection. Sneezing alone cannot identify the cause.

Saline spray, fluids and rest can soothe the nose during a cold. Use tissues, wash your hands, and sneeze into your elbow to reduce spread. If dust or pet exposure appears to trigger episodes, ventilate the room and reduce contact where practical. A pharmacist can explain whether allergy medication is suitable; follow the product directions and check interactions with regular medicines. Avoid inserting objects into the nose or using irritant household sprays nearby.

Arrange an appointment when sneezing persists, returns often, disrupts sleep, or comes with ongoing nasal blockage, wheezing or reduced sense of smell. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, fainting, or a rapidly spreading rash. These features can signal a serious allergic reaction rather than an uncomplicated cold.
