What should you know about cold rash?

Cold air can dry and irritate the skin, while temperature shifts may bring out redness, itching, scaling, or raised areas. A rash that starts after a product, fabric, or metal contact can reflect Contact Dermatitis. Persistent itchy inflammation may fit Atopic Dermatitis, while a scaly or sharply bordered change may need assessment for conditions such as Psoriasis or Ringworm. Night-time itch, household spread, or a new medicine gives a clinician different clues, including Scabies or Drug Rash. Cold exposure alone does not establish the cause.

Warm the skin gradually, use gentle fragrance-free cleansing, and apply a plain moisturiser after washing. Cover exposed areas in cold wind and avoid scratching, harsh scrubs, and very hot water. Photograph the rash when it appears and note its location, scale, itch, new products, medicines, and whether it fades with warmth. Arrange assessment if it persists, recurs, spreads, or interferes with sleep.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, blistering over a large area, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, or skin that becomes dusky or numb after cold exposure. Prompt review is also sensible for fever, pus, facial or eye involvement, or a rash after starting a medicine. A clinician can distinguish a cold-triggered reaction from another skin condition rather than treating the appearance alone.

Ask what features point toward the likely cause, whether testing is needed, which products are safe during flares, and which changes should prompt same-day care.
