Cold Hives Treatment: What to Know

Cold exposure can cause itchy, raised welts as the skin warms again. The rash may follow cold water, wind, refrigerated items, or a sudden temperature change, and it can affect exposed skin or areas that contacted the trigger. Some people also develop deeper swelling, known as Angioedema, around the lips, eyelids, hands, or feet. The pattern is different from every cold-weather rash, so photographs and details about the trigger help a clinician. Hives may be accompanied by Itchy Skin, Skin Rash, or Skin Swelling.

Protect skin from cold wind and water, use gloves for cold objects, and warm the body gradually rather than stepping directly into very hot water. Avoid deliberately testing a large area of skin with cold water, because a widespread reaction can be dangerous. A clinician may recommend Antihistamine Treatment and explain when to take it. Oral Corticosteroid Treatment may be considered for selected severe flares, but it is not a routine self-care choice. Keep a record of exposure, onset, duration, swelling, and any medicines used.

Do not swim in cold water until the condition has been assessed.
