Cold feet and nose

The nose, fingers, and toes are exposed areas with little insulation, so the body narrows their surface blood vessels when it needs to conserve heat. Cold air, air conditioning, damp clothing, and stillness can make all three feel cool. Ongoing coldness may also occur with anaemia, iron deficiency, or an underactive thyroid. Reduced arterial flow is more concerning when one foot is colder than the other, or when pain, colour change, numbness, weakness, or sores appear. A cold nose and feet together do not point to one diagnosis by themselves.

Cover the nose and feet with breathable layers, change damp socks, and move gently to encourage normal warming. Avoid very hot water or direct heat on numb skin. Notice whether symptoms improve in a warm room and whether the nose or either foot changes colour. Persistent symptoms are worth discussing with a clinician, who may review circulation, medicines, and symptoms such as fatigue or breathlessness. Do not take iron unless testing and clinical advice support it.

Arrange a medical review if coldness continues despite warmth, repeatedly returns without cold exposure, or comes with tiredness, breathlessness, numbness, pain, or skin changes. Seek urgent care for a suddenly cold, pale or blue foot, severe pain, marked weakness, or loss of feeling. A non-healing sore also needs prompt assessment.
