Cold and sneezing: what should you know?

The common cold can inflame the lining of the nose, leading to sneezing, a runny nose and congestion. Allergic rhinitis tends to cause bouts of sneezing with an itchy nose, itchy or watery eyes, and symptoms that recur around pollen, dust or animals. House dust mite allergy and pet allergy are possible patterns when symptoms follow indoor exposure. Sneezing alone does not identify the cause; timing, associated symptoms and the environment provide useful clues.

Rest and drink fluids while a cold runs its course. Saline nasal rinses or spray may help clear mucus; use clean water and follow product instructions. Reduce exposure to smoke and known triggers, and wash hands after blowing your nose. A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether allergy medication is suitable, especially if you have other conditions or take regular medicines.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, interfere with daily activities, or come with wheezing, facial pain, persistent fever or reduced smell. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or throat, faintness, or a rapidly spreading itchy rash.

Ask whether the pattern fits a cold or allergic rhinitis, which triggers to track, and whether allergy medication or testing could help. Tell the clinician how long symptoms last and whether eyes, skin or breathing are involved.
