Cold and laryngitis: what to know

Coughing, throat clearing and dry air can keep the vocal folds irritated while the infection settles.

The larynx contains the vocal folds that vibrate to make sound. Inflammation changes that vibration, so the voice may become raspy, breathy or disappear temporarily. A common cold is one cause; acid reflux, smoke, heavy voice use and other infections can also irritate the larynx. Laryngitis is not the same as every hoarse voice, and a persistent voice change needs assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Use your voice sparingly and speak at an easy volume; avoid shouting and whispering. Drink fluids, humidify dry air and avoid smoking, vaping and alcohol if they worsen dryness. Try not to clear your throat repeatedly; sip water instead. Rest and choose simple symptom relief that is suitable for your medical history. Antibiotics do not help every cause of laryngitis, so use them only when prescribed for a diagnosed infection.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, noisy breathing, inability to swallow, drooling or rapidly worsening throat swelling. Arrange a GP consultation if the voice change is severe, keeps recurring, comes with significant pain, coughing blood, a neck lump or unexplained weight loss, or remains after the cold has cleared. A clinician may inspect the throat and decide whether the larynx needs specialist review.
