What should you know about cognitive burnout?

Short answer
Cognitive burnout is mental exhaustion after prolonged demands, often causing reduced concentration, slower thinking, irritability and disrupted sleep.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What cognitive burnout can feel like
You may find ordinary decisions unusually effortful, lose track of conversations, or need more time to complete familiar tasks. Mental tiredness can coexist with physical Fatigue, Feeling Anxious, Irritability or Loss of Libido. Sleep may be unrefreshing, and Difficulty Sleeping can further reduce attention. Burnout describes a pattern of strain and depleted recovery; it does not by itself prove that another medical condition is present. A clinician can consider work, caregiving, emotional pressure, medicines, sleep and other health factors.
What may help
Reduce non-essential demands temporarily and divide complex work into small, single-task periods. Keep regular meals, hydration, gentle movement and a consistent wind-down routine. Protect a realistic sleep schedule and take brief breaks before concentration collapses. Write down when symptoms occur, what makes them better, and how sleep affects your day. If symptoms persist or interfere with work, relationships or safety, arrange a clinical assessment. The linked Burnout and Insomnia pages offer related explanations.
When to seek care
Seek prompt medical advice for a sudden or rapidly worsening change in thinking, fainting, new weakness, severe headache, chest symptoms, or thoughts of self-harm. Arrange a routine appointment when concentration, sleep or mood problems continue despite rest, or when you are relying on alcohol or medicines to cope. Difficulty Concentrating, Difficulty Sleeping and Fatigue can have several causes, so assessment matters.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit burnout or another explanation, which sleep or mood factors should be checked, and what changes are realistic while you recover. Bring a short symptom and sleep record, a list of medicines and details of major recent pressures.

Questions people ask
Is cognitive burnout the same as ordinary tiredness?
No. It usually describes persistent mental depletion that affects thinking, recovery or daily functioning, rather than a brief tired spell.
Can sleep problems make cognitive burnout worse?
Yes. Difficulty Sleeping or Insomnia can reduce attention and recovery, creating a cycle of mental fatigue.
