Coffee and cluster headaches: what to know

Short answer
Coffee may influence cluster headache attacks, but repeated severe one-sided headaches need medical assessment and a personalised plan.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How coffee may fit the pattern
Cluster headache is a neurological condition involving attacks of intense pain, often around one eye or on one side of the head. The painful period may occur with a blocked or runny nose, tearing, a red eye, or restlessness. Caffeine can affect blood vessels and alertness, and changing your usual intake may alter your personal headache pattern. That does not prove coffee caused an attack. Keeping a diary of coffee, sleep, alcohol, timing, pain location, and accompanying eye or nose symptoms can help distinguish a cluster pattern from another type of Headache or Facial Pain and Pressure.
Do not try to manage repeated attacks by continually increasing caffeine. Caffeine can also disturb sleep, and disrupted sleep may make headache management harder. A GP can assess the pattern and arrange appropriate care.
What you can do
Record when each attack begins, how long it lasts, which side hurts, and what happens to the eye or nose. Note coffee type, timing, and any missed servings. Keep intake consistent while waiting for advice rather than making abrupt, large changes. Rest in a safe place, avoid driving during severe pain, and use only treatments recommended for you. Arrange a GP Consultation for recurrent, disabling, or unfamiliar attacks.
When urgent help is needed
Get urgent help for a sudden severe headache, a new headache with weakness, confusion, fainting, fever and a stiff neck, vision loss, or head injury. Seek prompt assessment when severe one-sided attacks are new, changing, happening in a cluster of repeated episodes, or accompanied by a drooping eyelid or unequal pupils.
Questions for your doctor
Does my pain pattern fit cluster headache or another headache disorder? Should I change my coffee intake, and if so, how gradually? Which treatment should I use at the first sign of an attack, and what symptoms require emergency care?

Questions people ask
Can coffee trigger a cluster headache?
It may influence an individual pattern, especially when intake changes, but coffee alone cannot establish the diagnosis.
Should caffeine be used as treatment?
Do not rely on self-directed caffeine treatment; a clinician can recommend a safer, condition-appropriate plan.
