Short answer

Coffee can aggravate indigestion by stimulating acid and gut activity, but recurring discomfort may have another cause that needs assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Possible reasons for symptoms

Indigestion may feel like upper-abdominal pain, fullness, early satiety, belching, nausea, or burning. Coffee can irritate some stomachs, particularly when taken on an empty stomach, and milk, cream, or sweeteners may add a separate trigger. Similar symptoms can occur with Acid Reflux, Gastritis, a Hiatus Hernia, Gallstones, Helicobacter Pylori Infection, or a Peptic Ulcer. The timing of symptoms after coffee is useful information, not proof of a diagnosis.

Ways to test your trigger

Pause coffee briefly and write down meals, drink ingredients, timing, discomfort, nausea, and bowel changes. Eat slowly, choose smaller meals, and avoid lying down immediately after eating. Once symptoms have settled, reintroduce one coffee variation at a time if you wish to test it. A pharmacist can discuss Acid Reflux Medication, but repeated symptoms should be reviewed rather than managed indefinitely without finding the cause.

When indigestion needs attention

Get urgent help for vomiting blood, black stools, severe or worsening pain, fainting, or chest pain with breathlessness or sweating. Arrange a clinical review for difficulty swallowing, persistent vomiting, unintentional weight loss, anaemia symptoms, or discomfort that keeps returning. The assessment may include an examination, medicine review, and targeted testing.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms suggest reflux, stomach irritation, gallbladder disease, or infection; whether testing is needed; and which foods, drinks, or medicines to avoid while symptoms settle.

Questions people ask

Can coffee cause indigestion without causing heartburn?

Yes. Coffee may produce upper-abdominal discomfort, fullness, nausea, or belching without the typical burning sensation of reflux.

What if indigestion continues after stopping coffee?

Arrange a medical review because persistent symptoms may reflect reflux, stomach irritation, infection, gallstones, or another condition.
