Short answer

Coffee may worsen heartburn by relaxing the valve above the stomach or irritating the upper digestive tract, although triggers differ between people.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible effect
Coffee can make reflux symptoms more noticeable.
Helpful trial
Pause coffee and record symptom changes.
Urgent concern
Chest pressure or bleeding needs immediate help.

What the burning can reflect

Heartburn is a burning sensation that can rise from the upper abdomen into the chest or throat. Coffee may make reflux easier in some people, while large meals, lying down soon after eating, or individual ingredients may also contribute. Recurrent symptoms can occur with Acid Reflux, Gastritis, a Hiatus Hernia, or a Peptic Ulcer. Obesity can increase pressure on the abdomen and contribute to reflux, but heartburn itself does not identify one cause.

Practical changes

Keep a diary of coffee type, timing, food, posture, and symptoms. Try a temporary pause, avoid coffee close to bedtime, and remain upright after meals. Smaller meals and avoiding personal triggers may help. Do not assume decaffeinated coffee will suit everyone, because acidity and other ingredients can still irritate symptoms. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether Acid Reflux Medication is suitable, especially if symptoms keep returning.

When to get checked

Seek emergency help for chest pressure, sweating, breathlessness, fainting, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw, because these may not be simple heartburn. Arrange medical review for trouble swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, or heartburn that repeatedly disrupts sleep. Regular symptoms need a diagnosis rather than indefinite self-treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms fit reflux or need testing for another cause, which lifestyle changes are relevant, and how long you should use any recommended medicine. Describe any swallowing change or night-time symptoms.

Questions people ask

Is coffee always a cause of heartburn?

No. Some people tolerate it, while others notice symptoms after coffee or its additions. A diary and temporary pause can clarify your pattern.

Can decaffeinated coffee still cause symptoms?

Yes. Caffeine is only one possible factor; acidity, volume, timing, and added milk or flavourings may also matter.
