Coconut Oil to Remove Cradle Cap: What to Know

Cradle cap is a common form of infant scalp scaling. It can look like greasy or dry yellow-white flakes and may extend around the hairline or behind the ears. It is usually not caused by poor hygiene and often does not bother the baby. Coconut oil can soften attached scale, making it easier to lift, but it does not address every cause of scalp inflammation. Heavy residue may irritate skin or encourage buildup, especially if the scalp is already red or broken.

Use a small amount on the affected scalp for a short period, then loosen only the softened flakes with a soft baby brush or washcloth. Never pick, scrape, or pull scales. Wash the oil out with a mild baby shampoo and keep it away from the eyes. Do not use essential oils, adult dandruff products, or fragranced mixtures on an infant unless a clinician recommends them. If scales keep returning, ask about emollient therapy and whether another treatment is appropriate.

Have the scalp checked if it is very red, swollen, painful, bleeding, oozing, crusted, foul-smelling, or spreading beyond the scalp. Seek advice if the baby seems unwell, scratches persistently, develops hair loss, or the rash does not improve with gentle care. A clinician may consider infection or another dermatitis; antifungal treatment should only be used when advised for the infant.
