What should you know about cobalt chrome molybdenum alloy?

Its suitability depends on the implant design, where the component sits, the materials it moves against and individual clinical factors. Having this alloy in an implant does not by itself mean there is a problem.

The alloy combines cobalt, chromium and molybdenum to make a hard material that resists deformation and corrosion. Depending on the device, it may form a femoral head, a knee component or part of a resurfacing implant. Other parts of the same replacement may be made from ceramic, titanium alloy or medical-grade plastic.

Normal movement can release very small amounts of metal from an implant surface, while abnormal wear, corrosion or a poorly functioning component may increase debris. A tissue reaction or metal sensitivity is possible, but symptoms such as pain have several other implant-related and non-implant causes. The direction of assessment starts with the whole joint rather than assuming the alloy is responsible.

Keep a copy of your implant card and attend planned reviews. Before magnetic resonance imaging, surgery or treatment for a suspected metal allergy, tell the clinician that you have an implant and share its details. Routine removal is not indicated simply because a component contains cobalt chrome molybdenum.

When symptoms develop, an orthopaedic clinician may compare current and earlier imaging, assess movement and stability, and look for infection or mechanical causes. Metal-ion blood tests or specialised imaging may be considered for particular implants or findings; a single test result should be interpreted alongside symptoms and imaging.

Book an assessment for new or progressive joint pain, swelling, grinding, clicking, reduced range of motion, weakness or difficulty walking. Obtain urgent care after a sudden deformity, a fall followed by inability to use the limb, or rapidly worsening pain with fever, redness or wound drainage. Those warning signs can indicate dislocation, fracture or infection regardless of the implant material.

Useful questions include: Which implant components contain this alloy? What material forms the other bearing surface? Are my symptoms more consistent with wear, loosening, infection or a soft-tissue problem? Which follow-up plan and tests fit my specific implant?
