Is CO2 laser painful?

CO2 laser energy heats water in the skin. Depending on the technique, this can create tiny columns of injury or remove a broader surface layer. Patients commonly describe warmth, snapping, prickling or a sunburn-like sensation; the feeling varies with the site, settings and personal sensitivity.

A deeper treatment generally creates a more involved healing period than a lighter fractional pass. Facial areas may feel tight or swollen afterward, and tenderness can continue while the surface repairs. Pain that steadily intensifies is different from expected early soreness and deserves a clinical review.

Discuss comfort before the appointment rather than waiting until the laser starts. The clinic may use topical anaesthetic, cooling, airflow or other measures suited to the area and treatment plan. Tell the clinician if the numbing is incomplete, because they can reassess before continuing.

Plan gentle aftercare, keep the area protected, and use only products recommended by the treating team. Avoid rubbing, picking flakes or applying irritating cosmetics while the skin is recovering. Arrange help if swelling or eye-area treatment could temporarily affect daily activities.

Call the clinic if pain becomes severe, worsens after initially easing, prevents sleep despite the prescribed plan, or occurs with spreading redness, pus-like drainage, fever or extensive blisters. For treatment near the eyes, urgent assessment is needed for eye pain or a change in vision.

Ask which part of treatment is expected to feel strongest, what numbing is offered, how long tenderness may last, which pain medicines are suitable for you, and who to contact if discomfort exceeds the expected pattern.
