What should you know about CO2 laser and metal?

CO2 laser resurfacing acts on targeted skin rather than treating the whole body. Metal can mean a piercing, jewellery, dental work, an orthopaedic implant, or a metal part within the laser system. These situations are different. A surface item may need removal, while an internal implant requires the provider to consider its location, depth, and the proposed energy settings.

CO2 laser is not the same as an MRI. Still, never assume that metal is irrelevant: disclose it before treatment and show documentation when available. The clinician should also review medicines, healing problems, active infection, and pigment-change risk.

Make a list of piercings, permanent jewellery, surgical hardware, dental devices, and any metal near the planned area. Do not remove a medical device yourself. Ask whether jewellery must be removed and how the team will protect eyes, mucous membranes, tattoos, or nearby skin.

If a piercing becomes trapped, embedded, or difficult to remove, seek medical assistance rather than forcing it.
