CO2 laser light treatment: how it works

Carbon dioxide laser energy is absorbed by water in skin cells. Depending on the device and settings, the beam can vaporise tiny columns of tissue, heat surrounding layers, or combine both approaches. This controlled effect signals repair and can refine surface texture, selected scars and some signs of photoageing. It also creates inflammation, so redness, warmth, swelling, peeling and temporary pigment changes are possible. The treatment is not the same as ordinary visible light used for illumination or a home light mask.

A clinician chooses the wavelength delivery, pulse pattern, coverage and depth after examining the area and discussing your goal. Mention recent tanning, active infection, cold sores, medicines and a history of dark marks or slow healing. Afterward, use only the recommended cleanser, dressing and moisturiser, do not pick crusts, and protect healing skin from sunlight. Recovery varies with the depth and area treated.

Contact the clinic if pain, swelling, redness or discharge is worsening, or if the treated surface is not healing as expected. Seek urgent care for fever, spreading redness, severe facial swelling, eye changes or breathing difficulty. Persistent pigment alteration should be assessed before adding exfoliants or bleaching products.
