What should you know about CO2 laser goggles?

CO2 laser energy can injure delicate eye structures if it reaches the eye directly or through an unsafe gap. Protection is selected for the laser’s wavelength and the treatment setup; ordinary sunglasses, fashion eyewear, or improvised covers are not substitutes.

Different procedures may require different protection. The clinician may use fitted goggles, protective shields, or another controlled method depending on whether treatment is near the eyelids, cheeks, forehead, or another area. Eye protection should not be removed because the beam feels distant or the session seems brief.

Check that the provider explains the protective equipment before treatment begins. Tell the team if goggles pinch, shift, block your breathing, or prevent you from keeping your eyes comfortably closed. Keep them in place until the clinician says the laser is off and it is safe to remove them.

Follow instructions about contact lenses, eye makeup, and eyelid treatment. Do not bring personal eyewear as a replacement unless the treating team has specifically confirmed that it is suitable for the device and procedure.

Seek urgent medical assessment for eye pain, blurred or reduced vision, new light sensitivity, a persistent foreign-body sensation, flashing lights, or a new dark spot in your vision after laser exposure. Do not rub the eye or wait for symptoms to become severe before contacting the treatment team.

Ask what protection is being used, whether it is appropriate for the device’s wavelength, how eyelid-area treatment will be shielded, and who to contact if eye symptoms appear after leaving the clinic.
