What should you know about CO2 laser for scars?

CO2 laser creates controlled thermal injury in the scar and nearby skin. As the area repairs, the surface may become smoother and collagen may reorganise. Fractional treatment leaves untreated skin between laser columns and is often selected when a gradual approach is appropriate; more extensive resurfacing removes a broader surface and needs more healing support. Results depend on whether the scar is depressed, raised, firm, soft, pale, or darker than nearby skin.

A laser cannot restore the original skin completely. Active acne, infection, eczema, a tendency toward raised scars, and a history of pigment shifts can change whether treatment is advisable.

Have the scar diagnosed before treatment, particularly if it is changing, painful, bleeding, or not clearly linked to an injury or operation. Share your skin tone, previous wound-healing problems, cold sore history, medicines, and current skincare. Follow the clinic's cleansing and moisturising plan, avoid picking flakes, reduce sun exposure, and use the recommended broad-spectrum protection once the skin can tolerate it. Pause exfoliating acids, retinoids, and fragranced products until the clinician confirms that the barrier has recovered.

Contact the clinic if pain, redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge is worsening rather than settling, or if fever develops. Prompt review is also needed for blistering, a wound that remains open, or a rapid change in scar colour. Seek urgent help for facial swelling that affects vision or breathing. A scar that becomes increasingly raised or itchy may need a different treatment plan.

Ask what scar type you have, whether fractional resurfacing is appropriate, how many treatment stages may be considered, how pigment risk will be reduced, and when normal skincare and sun protection can resume.
