CO2 Laser for Melasma: What to Know

Melasma causes uneven brown or grey-brown patches, commonly on the face. It can be influenced by sunlight, visible light, hormones, heat, and skin inflammation. CO2 laser removes or remodels surface layers with controlled heat, so it may temporarily change the appearance of pigment but can also trigger post-inflammatory darkening or make patches more noticeable.

A dermatologist will usually consider the depth and pattern of pigment, your skin tone, previous reactions, and whether simpler measures are controlling the condition. CO2 laser resurfacing or laser skin resurfacing may be discussed only after weighing those factors; treatment for acne scars is a different indication.

Bring a list of skin products and medicines, and mention pregnancy, hormonal treatment, recent tanning, sensitive skin, and any history of dark marks after irritation. Ask how light and heat exposure will be reduced and whether a test area or another approach is more suitable.

After any procedure, use the prescribed gentle routine and broad-spectrum sun protection, avoid picking or scrubbing, and limit heat exposure while the skin is recovering. Melasma can return even after it fades, so ongoing protection and the maintenance plan matter as much as the procedure itself.

Contact your clinician if burning, swelling, pain, blistering, or redness is worsening, or if darkening spreads beyond the treated area. Arrange review for persistent pale patches, signs of infection, or a reaction to a prescribed product. Get urgent help for facial swelling with breathing or swallowing difficulty.
