What should you know about CO2 laser for dark circles?

Dark circles are an appearance rather than one single diagnosis. Thin eyelid skin, inherited pigmentation, rubbing, dryness, visible vessels, tear-trough hollows, and shadows from surrounding contours can each contribute. CO2 laser resurfaces skin and encourages collagen remodelling, so it is more suited to certain surface changes than to a hollow that creates a shadow.

It is also important to check for itchy, scaly, or irritated skin. Atopic dermatitis around the eyes can darken the area through inflammation and rubbing, and active irritation should be addressed carefully before resurfacing.

Bring a list of eye products and medicines, and mention allergies, eczema, cold sores, eye disease, contact-lens use, previous fillers, and any history of pigment changes after procedures. The clinician should examine the skin, contour, and colour rather than treating every dark circle as a laser problem.

During healing, follow the prescribed eye-area care exactly, avoid rubbing and unapproved products, and protect the area from sunlight. Ask when makeup and active skincare can return, because the eyelid barrier is delicate.

Report increasing pain, discharge, marked swelling, blistering, or redness that spreads beyond the treated area. Seek urgent eye assessment for vision change, severe eye pain, light sensitivity, or difficulty moving the eye. Do not place household creams or strong antiseptics near the eye unless prescribed.

Ask whether the main issue is pigment, thin skin, a tear-trough hollow, shadowing, or dermatitis; what the laser can realistically change; and what eye protection and aftercare the procedure requires.
