What Should You Know About CO2 Laser Eye Treatment?

CO2 laser eye treatment usually refers to carefully controlled resurfacing of eyelid or nearby facial skin, not treatment of the eyeball itself. The laser removes or heats selected layers of skin to address concerns such as fine lines, uneven texture, or some scars. Because the area is close to delicate eye structures, treatment should be planned by a qualified clinician who can protect the eyes and assess whether the concern is suitable for laser care.

Before treatment, the clinician examines the skin around the eyes and asks about medicines, previous procedures, healing problems, cold sores, pigmentation changes, and eye conditions. During the procedure, protective eye equipment and careful treatment limits help keep the laser beam away from the eye. Numbing medicine may be used, and the treated skin can feel hot, tight, swollen, or tender afterwards.

Recovery depends on the laser settings and the area treated. Peeling, redness, crusting, and sensitivity to sunlight can occur while new surface skin forms. Follow the wound-care instructions closely, avoid picking at flakes or crusts, and protect the area from sunlight.
