What should you know about CO2 laser around the eyes?

The eyelid and nearby skin are thin, mobile and close to delicate eye structures. CO2 laser can remove or heat selected layers of skin to improve texture, fine lines or scars, but the energy settings and treatment boundary must be chosen carefully. Protective shields or other eye-safety measures are used according to the treatment approach.

Temporary redness, swelling, tightness, dryness and sensitivity can occur. The final appearance develops gradually as the surface heals and collagen changes. Laser is not a treatment for every eyelid concern, and loose skin, prominent fat or an eye disease may need a different assessment.

Tell the clinician about contact lenses, dry eyes, blepharitis, cold sores, eczema, recent tanning, medicines and previous pigment changes. Confirm who will perform the procedure and what eye protection will be used. Follow cleansing and ointment instructions, do not rub or peel the treated skin, limit sun exposure and use the recommended protection once the surface permits. Arrange help if swelling temporarily affects vision or opening the eyes.

Contact the clinic urgently for increasing eye pain, blurred or reduced vision, marked light sensitivity, discharge, a swollen eye that cannot open, or redness spreading beyond the expected treatment area. Fever, worsening pain or pus may indicate infection. Sudden vision loss or severe eye pain needs emergency assessment.
