Cluster headache lasting for days

Cluster headache usually comes as separate attacks rather than one unbroken episode. Each attack can be severe, with pain around one eye or temple and same-sided tearing, redness, nasal blockage or restlessness. Attacks may repeat during an active period, leaving little time to recover and making the overall problem feel continuous.

A headache that never eases, steadily worsens, or changes from your usual pattern should not automatically be labelled cluster headache. Migraine, medication-related headache, eye disease and urgent neurological conditions can produce different patterns, so the timing between attacks matters.

Contact a GP promptly if attacks have continued across several days, especially if this is new. Note the start and end of every attack, pain location, eye and nose signs, sleep, possible triggers and medicines. Follow only the treatment instructions given to you; taking extra doses or combining products can create problems. Rest in a quiet space between attacks, keep fluids available and ask someone to help with driving or childcare if pain impairs you.

Seek emergency care for a sudden explosive headache, new weakness or numbness, confusion, fainting, seizure, fever with stiff neck, persistent vomiting, or new loss of vision. Urgent review is also appropriate when severe pain is continuous, follows a head injury, or does not resemble previous attacks. Do not wait for the pattern to settle if you feel seriously unwell.
