Cluster headache and blood pressure: what to know

Severe pain, fear, and movement during an attack can influence pulse and blood pressure. That does not show that high blood pressure caused the headache, and a normal reading does not rule out cluster headache. Cluster headache is identified from the attack pattern and associated signs, such as intense one-sided pain with tearing, eye redness, or nasal symptoms on the same side. Other headache or medical problems may also need consideration.

If you measure your blood pressure, sit quietly first, use a correctly fitting cuff, and write down the reading, time, symptoms, and any medicine taken. Do not repeatedly check it every few minutes while distressed. Continue prescribed blood-pressure medicine unless a clinician tells you otherwise. Seek emergency care for a sudden severe headache with weakness, speech difficulty, confusion, fainting, seizure, chest pain, severe breathlessness, or vision loss. A painful red eye with blurred vision or halos also needs urgent assessment. Do not rely on a blood-pressure number to decide that severe new symptoms are harmless. If attacks recur without red flags, obtain medical review to establish the cause and treatment plan.
