Clonex and tranexamic acid

Brand names can vary between markets, so read the package for the active ingredient and strength before taking it. Tranexamic acid is used for certain bleeding problems, including heavy menstrual bleeding; it does not regulate hormones or treat the underlying cause of abnormal bleeding.

Tranexamic acid slows fibrinolysis, the process that dissolves clots. For heavy periods, it is commonly taken only during bleeding according to the prescribed or labelled directions. Some clinicians also use tranexamic acid in selected skin-treatment plans for melasma, but the route, dose, benefits, and risks differ from treatment for heavy bleeding.

Unexpectedly heavy, irregular, or postmenopausal bleeding still needs assessment. The medicine may reduce blood loss without explaining why it started, so clinicians may investigate pregnancy-related causes, fibroids, hormonal changes, medicines, or other conditions based on the pattern and examination.

Take only the dose and formulation shown on your prescription or product label, swallow tablets as directed, and do not double a missed dose. Check with a clinician before use if you have had a blood clot, have kidney disease, blood in the urine, seizures, or unexplained irregular bleeding.

Tell the prescriber about combined hormonal contraception and all medicines or supplements you use because clotting risk and dosing considerations may change. Nausea, diarrhoea, or abdominal discomfort can occur. Do not use an oral product on the skin or substitute a cosmetic formulation for prescribed tablets.

Stop taking the medicine and seek urgent care for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, one-sided leg pain or swelling, sudden weakness or numbness, difficulty speaking, or a new visual disturbance. These symptoms need prompt assessment for a possible clot or other serious reaction.

Emergency help is also appropriate for bleeding accompanied by fainting, confusion, severe weakness, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, or a possible pregnancy. Contact the prescriber if bleeding remains heavy despite treatment, becomes more irregular, or returns outside the expected menstrual pattern.

Show the package and ask the pharmacist to confirm its active ingredient, strength, purpose, dose, and duration. Ask whether your health history or contraception changes its suitability, what to do after a missed dose, which side effects require stopping, and when persistent bleeding should be investigated.
