What should you know about clogged pore armpit lump?

Skin-related lumps may be red, sore, warm or centred on a visible hair or pore. Deeper lumps can be enlarged lymph nodes or arise from other tissues, so appearance and touch alone cannot always identify the cause.

Shaving, friction, sweating and ingrown hairs can irritate a follicle and form a small bump near the skin surface. A boil or abscess may become increasingly painful and collect pus. Recurrent deep, painful nodules in the armpits can reflect a chronic inflammatory skin condition and deserve a clinician's assessment.

Note when the lump appeared and whether it changes in size, pain, redness or drainage. Arrange an appointment if it does not settle, keeps returning, feels hard or fixed, or is accompanied by a breast or chest-wall change. A clinician may examine the skin, breasts and lymph-node areas and decide whether imaging or sampling is appropriate.

Seek same-day medical advice for rapidly spreading redness, worsening swelling, severe pain, fever, pus with increasing illness, or red streaking from the area. Promptly report an unexplained persistent lump, a growing or fixed mass, drenching night sweats, unexplained weight loss, arm swelling, nipple discharge, skin dimpling or a new breast lump.

Ask whether the lump appears to arise from skin or a lymph node, whether there are signs of infection, whether antibiotics or drainage are appropriate, what changes should prompt urgent reassessment, and whether an ultrasound or tissue sample would clarify the cause.
