What should you know about clindamycin and SJS?

Stevens-Johnson syndrome often begins with feeling unwell, fever, sore throat, or burning eyes, followed by tender red or dusky skin changes. Blisters, peeling, and raw areas may develop, especially around the mouth, eyes, nose, or genitals. A simple itchy rash is not the same pattern, and many rashes during clindamycin use have other explanations, including a drug rash, contact dermatitis, heat rash, or an infection. Only urgent clinical assessment can distinguish them safely.

If a painful or rapidly spreading rash, blistering, peeling, or mucosal sores appear during or soon after clindamycin, stop and seek emergency medical care immediately rather than waiting for a routine appointment. Take the medicine packaging and a list of other medicines with you. Do not apply creams to open skin, break blisters, or take another dose while waiting for professional direction.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, extensive blistering, skin peeling, severe skin pain, eye pain, or difficulty swallowing. Urgent assessment is also needed for fever with a spreading tender rash or sores in the mouth, eyes, or genital area. These signs need hospital-level evaluation because skin and fluid loss can become dangerous.

Ask whether clindamycin should be recorded as a suspected serious reaction, which related medicines to avoid until reviewed, how the reaction will be documented, and what future warning signs should prompt emergency care.
