Clindamycin for scabies: what to know

Scabies is caused by mites that burrow into the outer skin. Intense itching, often worse at night, and a spreading itchy skin rash can affect several people who share close contact. Scratching may break the skin and allow bacteria to enter, but that secondary infection is different from the mite infestation itself.

Clindamycin targets certain bacteria, not scabies mites or their eggs. Taking it for an unconfirmed rash can delay the scabies treatment you need and may expose you to avoidable medicine side effects. A GP consultation can help distinguish scabies from eczema, contact irritation, or another rash.

Arrange an assessment if scabies is possible, particularly when itching is worse at night or close contacts are itchy too. Use the prescribed scabies treatment exactly as directed; treatment commonly includes applying a mite-killing medicine to the areas specified by the clinician and following instructions about household contacts and clothing.

Do not substitute clindamycin for scabies treatment. If scratched areas are crusted, painful, warm, or oozing, mention this because a clinician may assess for a bacterial infection as well. Wash or isolate items as advised, avoid close skin-to-skin contact until treatment guidance is clear, and do not keep repeating products without review.

Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, severe pain, fever, or red streaks. Get urgent help if you feel very unwell or if swelling affects the face or eyes. Arrange review when itching continues after the advised scabies plan, new burrows or rash appear, or a baby, older adult, pregnant person, or immunocompromised person may be affected.

Ask whether the pattern fits scabies, which treatment should be used, who in the household needs treatment, and how to manage itching after the mites have been treated. Ask whether any scratched area needs a separate antibiotic and tell the clinician about allergies and current medicines.
