What should you know about clindamycin boils?

A boil is a tender, infected lump that can collect pus around a hair follicle. Clindamycin is an antibiotic that may be used when a clinician thinks susceptible bacteria are involved or the infection extends into nearby skin. It cannot reliably empty a pocket of pus by itself. A painful lump can also be a cyst, inflamed follicle, or another type of skin lump, so appearance alone does not identify the cause.

Never squeeze, pierce, or cut a boil at home. Pressure can push infection into surrounding tissue and spread bacteria to other people or surfaces.

Take clindamycin exactly as prescribed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it. Keep the area clean and covered with a fresh dressing if it is draining. Wash hands after touching the site, avoid sharing towels, and launder clothing or bedding that contacts drainage.

A warm, clean compress may ease discomfort, but it should not replace an examination. Do not put leftover creams or someone else’s antibiotics on the lump. A clinician may recommend antibiotic therapy for skin infection, a culture, or abscess drainage depending on the findings.

Seek prompt care if redness is spreading, pain is rapidly worsening, fever or chills develop, red streaks appear, or the boil is near the eye, nose, spine, or genitals. Get assessed sooner for multiple boils, repeated episodes, or a weakened immune system. During or after clindamycin, urgent advice is needed for severe or persistent watery or bloody diarrhoea.

Ask whether the lump is a boil or another skin lump, whether it needs drainage, and how to dress it. Confirm the dose and duration, what side effects to watch for, and when the area should be rechecked if it is not improving.
