What should you know about clindamycin and ciprofloxacin for cellulitis?

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of deeper skin layers that can cause spreading redness, warmth, swelling, and pain. Clindamycin covers some bacteria commonly involved in skin infections. Ciprofloxacin has a different coverage pattern and is not a routine substitute for every case of cellulitis. A clinician chooses treatment after considering the likely source, severity, allergies, prior antibiotics, kidney function, and local resistance patterns.

A wound, bite, abscess, athlete's foot, or another opening in the skin can influence the suspected organism. Some infections need drainage, a different antibiotic, hospital treatment, or reassessment rather than simply adding medicines.

Emergency help is needed for difficulty breathing or signs of sepsis such as extreme weakness, fast breathing, or altered alertness.
