Why does my shoulder click?

Short answer
A shoulder click can come from normal tissue movement, but pain, weakness or instability makes assessment more useful.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
A single sound without discomfort or loss of function is often less concerning than a new click after injury. Notice whether the sound occurs overhead, while rotating the arm or when lowering it, and whether the shoulder catches or feels loose.
Where a click can come from
The shoulder contains a ball-and-socket joint, tendons, a rim of cartilage and the shoulder blade moving over the ribs. A tendon can shift across a bony edge, the joint can release a small pressure change, or the shoulder blade can rub against nearby tissues. These mechanisms can sound similar.
Shoulder instability can present with clicking together with slipping, apprehension or a sense that the joint may come out. Shoulder osteoarthritis can present with clicking or grinding alongside stiffness and pain. The sound alone cannot identify either condition.
What to track and change
Continue comfortable movement, but scale back the exact exercise that produces pain, catching or a loose sensation. Avoid repeatedly forcing the click to demonstrate it. During training, lower the load or range and check that the shoulder blade moves smoothly rather than shrugging upward.
Keep a brief record of the movement, sound, pain and any weakness. A physiotherapist or doctor can compare active and assisted motion, test strength and examine stability. Imaging is chosen from the history and examination rather than from noise alone.
Signs that need assessment
Book a routine review when clicking persists with pain, limits sleep or activity, follows repeated dislocations, or is accompanied by declining strength or motion. Prompt care is appropriate after an injury if the shoulder looks out of place, the arm cannot be lifted, or numbness and weakness appear.
Seek urgent help for a cold or pale hand, rapidly increasing swelling, severe unrelenting pain, or fever with a hot red shoulder. Those features matter because circulation, nerve function or infection may be involved.
Questions that clarify the cause
Ask which structure seems to create the click, whether the joint is stable, and whether your strength differs between sides. Discuss which movements are safe to continue, what rehabilitation should target, and which change in symptoms would justify imaging or follow-up.

Questions people ask
Does a clicking shoulder need a scan?
Not automatically. Examination findings, an injury history, pain, weakness and loss of movement help determine whether imaging could change care.
Can exercise continue when my shoulder clicks?
Comfortable exercise can often continue. Reduce or stop a movement if it causes pain, catching, weakness or a sensation that the joint is slipping.
